The Sunnyside Flock started with Norman and Lola. Having decided we wanted to keep sheep we took them on with the promise that they would neither be passed on nor eaten, both being of the age to make them useless. To us though they were invaluable, being our practice sheep.
After a year of this pair being very patient with our attemps at sheep keeping we felt ready to start breeding and with a list of pro/cons we settled on Icelandics. Milly (white badger faced ewe) was our first purchase (a birthday present for Belinda from me) and was already in lamb to a ram named Thokell who looked like a miniature highland cow with curly horns. We immediately fell in love with her and she has now become the grand matriarch of our small flock. All our ewes are her descendants.
For a while we stuck to crossing with a Shetland ram to produce our own meat but in 2017 we took the plunge and purchased a fantastic Icelandic ram from Sarah Pugh’s Swallow Flock.
We now concentrate on our Icelandics but are very pleased that our elderly practice victims are still going strong.
